Veterans Day in Boise!
We were so honored to participate in this year’s Boise Veterans Day Parade!
This years theme was “Letters from Home”. Ken’s grandfather, Nelson G. Douglass, Jr, served in WW1 in the 91st Infantry Division “aka Wild West Division”. He wrote nearly every day to his family and tried to paint as rosy a picture as he could so as not to worry his mother. However, the letter to his father is a bit more honest in its description of the reality of his life on the front.
A few of these letters were chosen by the Boise Veterans Committee and were read by actors to an attentive crowd of Idahoans.
Afterwards, Ken was interviewed by our local news KTVB channel 6. That’s his mug right there…
There is much more to this story – so much more. The abundance of letters include his correspondence with a German soldier, August Grimm. These letters document the struggles of the Grimm family post war and how both men came to understand the true nature of war, propaganda, hope, and devastating reality – “A Grimm Affair“.
On this Veterans Day, let us not forget those soldiers that were and those that are – their sacrifice continues.
